During the 1970s and 1980s, the southern Indian city of Madras (now Chennai) experienced a severe drought. In response, the local government, with support from international financial institutions, launched a project to source water from the Veeranam reservoir - an ancient structure built during the Chola dynasty - located about 200 miles south of the city. The plan involved transporting water through massive concrete pipes, each about 6 feet in diameter and 20 feet long. Unfortunately, the project failed due to corruption, poor management, and technical problems. Even today, remnants of the project - including unused pipes and manufacturing equipment - can still be seen along the 200-mile stretch. The local newspaper, The Hindu, once described it as an “archaeologist’s delight.”
I witnessed this era during my daily 15-mile commute to school, often wondering what would eventually become of those pipes. Over time, many of them became shelters for impoverished families.
The image above powerfully reflects the enduring belief that no matter a family's economic status, a mother sees education as the key to her daughter's empowerment. It shows how education can equip her child with the tools and knowledge to rise above poverty.
