Anvi, Ashwini and Arun Kumar's campaign to EDUCATE

Fundraising for Light up a Child’s Life this Holiday Season

What does Volunteering mean to me?

Some days I spend just five minutes, may be sharing a post, thinking about an idea or talking to a volunteer; some other days an hour or so planning an event, designing a poster or attending a conference call. However, everyday I feel proud that the little but valuable time I spend volunteering helps build a brighter future for children from underserved communities. It is for this sense of pride and happiness that I volunteer.

I started volunteering with Vibha.org 12 years ago and I've never looked back since. Vibha is a completely volunteer driven organization; volunteers is what makes Vibha. I have felt respected, included and loved in all the action centers I have volunteered with -- Minnesota, New Jersey, Bay Area and Mumbai. My leadership style has evolved tremendously. I have had amazing opportunities to explore ideas, lead teams and organize events. My network of trusted friends has just exploded to all corners of the world, lot of whom I have only spoken of phone.

Since the time Arun and I moved to India, I have closely interacted with 5 NGO partners who are working tirelessly to educate children from underserved communities (Society for Education and Action in Mahabalipuram serving the fishermen community, Sikshana Foundation in Bangalore, working to improve quality of education in ALL government schools of Karnataka, CORP India in Mumbai serving street dweller, slum areas and sex worker communities, Children Toy Foundation in Mumbai serving slum area children by providing toys, games and hobby classes as a part of their school curriculum, Leap For Word in Mumbai imparting their highly successful method of English language teaching to underprivileged children through workshops for teachers around India).

I, with a help of a few a volunteers, started the Mumbai chapter of Vibha in March of 2019. In the last 8 months we have conducted 3 health screening camps, one art exhibition, one donation drive and 2 counseling sessions, benefitting close to 1000 underprivileged children. The eye and dental treatments for severely affected children from the Thane center of CORP India and street children project in Central Mumbai, is funded by Vibha and is currently ongoing. Vibha Mumbai also organized a nature walk and a theater for change workshop to support in holistic approach to education; and in the works are art and dance classes, and English language workshops for teachers. Vibha Mumbai currently has 30 volunteers.

Anvi, my daughter who just turned 2, is already a Vibha volunteer. She comes with me on all the partner NGO visits and the children love playing with her. Her painting was displayed at the art exhibition Vibha Mumbai conducted in August. She even attended the Vibha conference, Pragati 2019 and kept everyone entertained.

I have kept at volunteering because of overwhelming support and encouragement I have received from friends and family. Thank you for reading this and being a big part of my support system. I wish to continue for many more years to come with your support.

This year, Anvi, Arun and I have an annual fundraiser setup. All the funds raised will go towards initiatives I am leading in Mumbai. I would also love to hear your ideas, suggestions and get contacts in Mumbai to further our cause. Please consider sharing my fundraiser with your family and friends.

Thanks,

Ashwini

Vibha Initiatives in 2018 and 2019

You have been there with us the past two drives.  YOU helped us raised INR 40 lakhs and INR 35 lakhs the past two years.  With your contributions,

  • We partnered with Samavesh in Bhopal, MP to improve the public education in government schools,
  • We funded Alamb’s skill development programs for slum girls in Delhi,
  • Took on new projects with Aide-et-Action in Hyderabad to educate migrant workers’ children and
  • Helped develop child care centers for street children through Swanirvar near Kolkata, WB.
  • We also worked directly with over 500 slum children in Mumbai to conduct health camps, counseling sessions and art exhibition.

This year, we want to increase our reach while continuing our impact across India.  Vibha enables and empowers ground level NGOs in improving the lives of underprivileged children across India.  We have more than 25+ partners across the country to improve the education, health and training needs of underprivileged children.  In 2020, we hope to partner more with the local, state and central government agencies to make long lasting sustainable impact.

The Prerana story, in partnership with Sikshana, of working with the Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh state governments is the inspiration behind our ambition to take our impact farther.  Across several districts, the program has impacted over 2.3 million children in more than 50,000 schools. These numbers and impact seem immense, don’t they?  When you partner with the government and work through the existing system of education, the reach and impact is indeed enormous.

As you read this, Vibha is in the process of launching Prerana in the states of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. And, we need YOUR help to add the two new states to the Prerna program.

This holiday season, let's enable millions more children!
